〖版主回复〗As an English major, you should realize that the full name of our specialty is English Language and Literature. This specialty is something like Chinese Language and Literture (汉语语言文学). Required by the teaching syllabus, we need to know something about linguistics. It is not a problem of use, but a problem of knowledge of culture, which may help you a true person in society. Hi!Ifeel frustrared at my codition.i feiled in the university exam so i come here and i am not a self-confidence girl,my classmates whpses study is not better than me enter a good university.now i still study hard as in the senior shool and i am at the top 0f my class,but i am not happy at this.i want to pass TEM-4 but i have no courage,whate can i do?

now i help a boy who is studying in Lanhai senior middle school .he graduated from junior middle school four years ago.and this year we met in summer holiday .he want to enter into university .he said i want to stay with you forever.he chose the subject what i studied in middle school .so i can help him .but i found i cant help him better,i mean when i helped him ,he fucoses his attention to me.so i decide leave him alone.but ...... i dont know.what can do for him?he studys very hard.and he has a lot of difficulties in his study that you can image.i dont think i can help him efficiently.so ,mr wang ,could you give me some advice? i am really confused .thank you !he is in grade three in lanhai . |

As for your private student, I think you should pay attentio to two points: one is that you need to have a good idea of transferring his attention from you to study. I think you are a clever girl,and you are able to have one idea after careful thought. Two, find out his real problems. Generally speaking, the main problem of a person who is not good at English is memory of vocabulary. When they can remmeber vocabulary, grammar is not a big problem. Mr. Wang - Im an American trying to help a Chinese friend pass the TEM-8. Shes a smart girl with good conversational English, but easily frustrated. Right now she seems interested in blasting through a giant vocabulary book. I think it would be more advantageous to her to pick up vocab and structures through reading and listening. Is the best method to have her read through sample texts from former TEM-8 exams, or to give her material that she is interested in? Personally I think the vocab shes studying is useless and meaningless (who actually says "abreast"?), but the essays in the exams seem pretty advanced. Can you offer some advice on what style articles she should focus on, and if she should concentrate on sheer vocabulary accumulation, or more on general reading comprehension?

〖版主回复〗Hi, Matt. It is so nice for me to have you here, but you are the first native speaker I have had here. I think you are right in advicing her to enlarge her vocabulary through reading and listening. Talking about a large part of words that you think are useless, we can understand it in this way: they will be upper-intermediate English learners when they graduate from the university. As upper-intermediate English learners, they should have good mastery of English languages, to be more exact, they should be literate. On the other hand, language proficiency is only one side of TEM-8, they will be also tested in terms of cultural knowledge such as English literature, linguistics, and brief knowledge about Britain and America. They should also learn something about English culture. |
